New law to save teen
drivers’ lives; supervised
practice makes perfect
SEATTLE – Vehicular collisions are the leading cause of death
for young Washington drivers between the ages of 15 and 20, according
to the Department of Licensing.
Beginning July 1, Washington state hopes to make
a positive dent in that statistic by implementing the new Graduated Driver
Licensing Law, which mandates additional supervised driving for teens,
after completing a Driver’s Education Course. The additional driving
hours must be completed before new teen drivers can obtain a license.
Key information about the new law will be presented
at Washington Insurance Council’s annual Spring Seminar, tomorrow at the
West Coast Grand Hotel at the Park (formerly Cavanaugh’s Inn at the Park)
in Spokane. Beginning at 9 a.m., a panel of experts, including State
Sen. Tracey Eide (D), 30th District, co-sponsor of the bill,
will present both an overview and crucial details about how the new law
is designed to help teenagers become safer, more responsible drivers.
The seminar also will include presentations on
Watercraft Safety and Child Safety Restraints. Media representatives
are invited to attend this seminar titled Consumer Safety For Insurance
Agents.
The hotel is located at West 303 North River
Drive, Spokane, WA 99201.
