Snowstorm: towing insurance, safety
precautions could save you some headaches
SEATTLE – Last night’s snowstorm has frustrated
drivers, backed up schedules and slowed freeways to a crawl.
As you make plans to travel throughout the day,
be cautious. You can dramatically reduce your chances of an accident
by following some basic safety tips and, if you do slide off the road,
having towing coverage is one of the best peace-of-mind investments you
can make.
Most auto insurance policies do not automatically
cover towing. Towing coverage is usually available for $5 to $10 per
year and also covers other hazards such as vehicle breakdown. It usually
pays your towing bill up to a specified amount such as $50 or $100.
“As with other types of insurance,” cautioned
Karl Newman, WIC executive director, “you can’t purchase coverage after
you need it – when you’ve had an accident or your car is in a ditch.
Since it protects you all year, the time to consider towing coverage is
before you need it.”
The Washington Insurance Council offers these
tips to help you and your family make it safely to your destination.
w
Before your trip, know the current road conditions and the
forecast for your route and destination.
w
Allow more distance between you and the vehicle in front
of you.
w
If you start to slide, pump your brakes gently and steer
in the direction of the slide. Avoid sudden acceleration.
w If you have anti-lock brakes, do
not pump your brakes. Instead press firmly on the brake pedal and
hold it down, allowing the anti-lock mechanism to work.
w Stay on main roads as much as possible.
In case of an emergency, you have a better chance of getting help on a
main route.
w Keep
an emergency winter driving kit in your car. The kit should include blankets,
water, high-energy snacks, highway warning devices, flares, flashlights
and batteries.
w
If you are involved in an auto accident, get the other driver’s
information – driver’s license and vehicle license numbers, insurance
company name and policy number and both work and home phone numbers.
w
Report the accident to your insurance company as soon as
possible so that claims adjusters can begin processing your claim right
away.
w If
you don’t have towing coverage, consider adding it for the next time a
snowstorm hits the state. Call your insurance company or agent for more
information.
